Scientific knowledge belongs in classrooms and communities, scientific conferences and government meetings, newsrooms and museums. I give presentations and work with media to help connect geoscience with the questions people are asking and the decisions they need to make.

Speaking

Wendy speaking to a conference audience.

I’ve given presentations to scientists, engineers, emergency managers, policymakers, educators, students, and public audiences about earthquakes, hazards, science communication, and careers in geoscience. Each audience brings different experiences and questions; the science remains rigorous, while the point of connection changes.

Topics include: earthquakes and our dynamic planet; hazards, risk, uncertainty, and preparedness; communicating complex science; and unconventional careers, representation, and belonging in science.

Speaking about earthquake preparedness at ShakeOut.

When an earthquake happens, people want to understand what happened, what might come next, and what it means for them. I work with television, radio, documentary, podcast, print, and digital media to explain the science, put events in context, and communicate uncertainty clearly.

I’ve also narrated more than 30 educational videos and animations and create original geoscience content for public audiences. My approach is to explain what we know, be clear about what we don’t know, and connect the information with people’s concerns.
